Monitor ASM Instances

You can monitor the ASM instances in a RAC External Database System and Single Instance External Database System on RAC One Node on the ASM details page.

Database Management supports ASM version 12.1 and later. Using Database Management, you can monitor the status of ASM instances, disk group usage, performance metrics, configuration details, and ASM users. This is supported through monitoring credentials. It's recommended that you use the default ASMSNMP user or any user with both the SYSASM and SYSDBA privileges.

To go to the ASM details page:

  1. Go to the Database System details page.
  2. In the ASM section, click the ASM display name.

    The ASM details page is displayed.

On the ASM details page, you can:

  • Click ASM information to view details such as the OCID of the ASM, the associated Database System, connector details, and ASM version. In the ASM information panel, you can also perform tasks such as going to the associated Database System details page or adding a connector.
  • Click More actions to perform the following tasks:
    • Click Alarms to monitor the total number of open alarms and the number of alarms by severity. Note that an alarm is only displayed in Database Management if the OCID of the resource is specified using the resourceId dimension when creating the alarm. You can click the number of alarms to access the Alarms panel and review the list of open alarms. For information, see Monitor Alarms for External Database Systems.
    • Click Tags to add, view, edit, or remove tags. For information, see Working with Resource Tags.
  • Monitor the ASM instances in the Summary section for the time period selected in the Time period applied filter.
    • Monitoring status timeline: Monitor the status of the ASM instances during the selected period of time.
    • Open alarms: Monitor the total number of open alarms and the number of alarms by severity.
    • Disk Group usage (GB): Monitor the disk group usage in GB during the selected period of time. You can hover the mouse on the chart to view additional details, filter the data displayed in the chart by clicking the dimensions in the legend, and sort the data displayed in the chart by selecting an option in the upper-right corner.
    • Top Disk Group consumers (GB): Monitor the top five consumers of the disk group in GB during the selected period of time. You can hover the mouse on the chart to view additional details and filter the data displayed in the chart by clicking the dimensions in the legend.
    • ASM instances: Monitor the status of the ASM instances and view the host on which the ASM instances are configured.
    • Serviced databases: Monitor the status of the databases supported by ASM along with information such as the database type, and the disk groups used by the database. Click the display name of the database to go to the corresponding Managed database details page.

The Summary section is displayed by default on the ASM details page, however, you can click one of the other options in the left pane under Resources to perform the following tasks:

  • Performance: Click one of the available tabs, Disk Groups or Databases, to monitor the I/O activity (read and write operations) in the databases and disk groups. High I/O activity can impact the performance of the database, and by monitoring I/O activity, you can optimize it and ensure efficient data access.
    • Response time (ms): Average time taken to process an I/O operation in milliseconds.
    • Throughput (MBPS): Total I/O throughput in MB per second.
    • I/O operations (IOPS): Number of I/O operations per second.
    • Operation size (MB/Operation): Average size of the I/O operation in MB.

    In the Disk Groups section below the performance charts, you can view additional details pertaining to the disk groups such as redundancy options and sparse types.

  • Configuration: Select an ASM instance and view the configuration information.
  • Users: View the ASM users and associated privileges.
  • Work requests: Monitor the work requests pertaining to the ASM instances.
