Release Notes:
- First platform release of Oracle Linux 8.
- The Oracle Linux 8 platform image is based off Oracle Linux 8 Update 2 and Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 6.
- The main disk partition is managed using Logical Volume Management (LVM). This gives you increased flexibility to create and resize partitions to suit your workloads.
- Swap is now handled by a file on the file system, giving you more detailed control over swap.
- The GRUB boot menu is hidden to reduce boot times. If you need access the GRUB menu during boot, press Esc or F5 repeatedly in the serial console. To renable the GRUB menu on boot, run the following commands:
# sudo grub2-editenv - unset menu_auto_hide# sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2-efi.cfg /bootis now on a dedicated partition. This is different from the Oracle Linux 7 in which/bootis a directory on/.- All log files are now stored under
/var/logand use the logrotate utility to retain the older logs instead of overwriting them after each reboot. /var/crashis now on a dedicated LVM disk partition to prevent running out of disk space when saving vmcore files.- Adds support for attaching up to 600 block storage volumes.
- The following tuned profiles have been enabled for performance:
oci-rps-xpsandoci-busy-polling, which are effective only for VM shapes with iSCSI-attached block volumes, andoci-cpu-powerandoci nic, which are effective only for BM shapes. - When setting or changing the password for account, note the following password configuration settings have been modifed to meet password complexity requirements:
maxrepeat: maximum number of allowed same consecutive characters is limited to 3.minclass: minimum of 4 character classes must be modified when a password is changed.

Security and Compliance
Oracle Linux platform images are based on the most recent release of Oracle Linux and are updated monthly. If you need to confirm the status of certifications, such as FIPS 140-3 or Common Criteria, see the Oracle Security Evaluations page for the latest information. FIPS mode is not enabled in Oracle Linux platform images. To modify this setting, see the FIPS section of the Oracle Linux Security Guide under Oracle Linux documentation or contact support for assistance.
