Enable Diagnostics & Management for External Databases

Before you enable Database Management Diagnostics & Management for External Databases, you must:

To enable Diagnostics & Management for External Databases in Database Management:

  1. Sign in to the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure console.
  2. At the top of the page, ensure that the region in which you want to enable Diagnostics & Management is selected.
    Note

Cross-region monitoring and management of Oracle Databases is not available.
  3. Open the navigation menu, click Observability & Management. Under Database Management, click Administration.
  4. Ensure that the correct compartment is selected in the Compartment applied filter.
  5. Click inside the Search by database display name field, select Deployment type, select External, and then click Apply filter.

The External Databases in the compartment are listed on the Managed databases page. These External Databases could have been registered either in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure External Database service or in Database Management.

    Note

On the Managed databases page, in addition to enabling Database Management features for External Databases, you can also perform the following tasks:
    • Click Actions and then click Register external database to register an External Database. The option to register External Databases in the Database Management interface uses the same panel as in the External Database service. For information, see Create a Handle for an External Database.
    • Click the Actions icon (Actions) for an External Database, and then click Connect to connect to an already registered External Database. The option to add a connection to an External Database in the Database Management interface is slightly different from the panel in the External Database service. For information, see Add a Connection.
    • Click Actions, click Discover Database System, and then select External Database System to discover External Database Systems. For more information, see Access Database Management Administration.
    • Click Actions, click Discover Exadata Infrastructure, and then select Exadata Infrastructure to discover Exadata Infrastructure resources. For more information, see Access Database Management Administration.
  6. Click the Actions icon (Actions) for an External Database, and then click View features.
  7. In the Features supported on <database name> database panel, in the Diagnostics & Management section, click Enable.
    Note

If you're enabling Diagnostics & Management for a PDB, then you must first enable it for the associated CDB.
  8. In the Enable Diagnostics & Management panel:
    1. Select an External connector from the drop-down list.
      Note

      • If a connection is not added to the External Database or if you want to use a different connector, click New connector to add a new connector and select it. For information, see Add a Connection.
      • If you're enabling Diagnostics & Management for a database in an Oracle Data Guard configuration that contains a physical standby database in mounted state, you must ensure that the connector is created by a monitoring user with the SYSDG privilege. If the SYSDG privilege is not granted to the monitoring user, metric collection may stop for the new standby databases following a role switchover or failover.
    2. Select a license option.
      Note

      • The Bring Your Own License (BYOL) subscription does not apply to the Oracle Database Standard Edition. For information on the BYOL subscription, see About Bring Your Own License Subscriptions.
      • If you're enabling Diagnostics & Management for a PDB, then you do not have to select a license option as it's inherited from the associated CDB.
    3. Click Enable.
The View work request button is displayed in the Feature to enable section, and you can click it to view the status of the task and any associated log or error messages.

On the Managed databases page, Enabled is displayed in the Diagnostics & Management column after Diagnostics & Management is successfully enabled. Click the Actions icon (Actions) for an External Database, and then click View details to go to the Managed database details page and begin using Diagnostics & Management features.

To disable Diagnostics & Management for an External Database, on the Managed databases page, click the Actions icon (Actions) for the External Database, and then click View features. In the Features supported on <database name> database panel, click Disable in the Diagnostics & Management section.

Add a Connection

You can add a connection to enable Database Management Diagnostics & Management for External Databases.

If a connection to an External Database does not exist, or if you want to use a different connector to enable Diagnostics & Management, then on the Managed databases page, click the Actions icon (Actions) for an External Database, and then click Connect to add a connection.

In the Add connection panel:
  1. Provide connector information:
    1. Connector display name: Optionally, edit the default name assigned to the connector to help you easily identify the resource.
    2. Agent: Select the Management Agent compartment, and then select the Management Agent to establish a connection.
  2. Specify connection string information:
    1. DNS hostname or SCAN name: Enter the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) or IP address for a single instance External Database or the FQDN of the Single Client Access Name (SCAN) listener or the SCAN virtual IP address for a RAC External Database.
    2. Port: Enter the port number.
    3. Service: Enter the service name of the External Database.
    4. Protocol: Select either the TCP or TCPS protocol to connect to the External Database.
    5. TLS secret: Select the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Vault service secret that contains the database wallet from the drop-down list. This field is only displayed if TCPS is selected in the Protocol field. For information on how to create a TLS secret in the Vault service, see Create a Connection to an External Database.
  3. Specify the credentials required to connect to the External Database:
